NFL Super Bowl LII Futures: Are The Pats Still Of Value to Online Bookies?

Sunday, 17 September 2017 / Published in Football

The New England Patriots were supposed to run the table and finish the NFL season 16-0. The team had great Super Bowl odds. And, it was a foregone conclusion Tom Brady and company would win the big game come February.

Things haven’t worked out as planned as the Pats lost 42-27 to the Kansas City Chiefs at home in week 1. NFL betting and online bookies were shocked with the Chiefs’ big win.

But the big question is, are the Pats still of value to online bookies?

Super Bowl odds

The Pats opened NFL week 1 at +325 to win the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the beat down put on them by Kansas City, dented New England’s Super Bowl odds.

The team slipped to +450 going into NFL week 2. The good news is for all Patriots’ backers, is the team will play New Orleans in week 2 at the Superdome.

The Saints lost in week 1 to Minnesota, so it could be a chance for NFL betting on the Pats to resume. You should have max betting limits set – especially if you didn’t during Week 1.

How to react to Week 1 loss

The initial reaction by many was that New England is overrated. Surely, there are online bookies backing off the Patriots as this season’s favorites.

The reality is, things shouldn’t change, as it was always difficult for the Patriots to equal their 2007 record of 16-0.

Just because the team lost in Week 1 to a solid Chiefs team that won the AFC West in 2016. And, were narrowly defeated by the Steelers in the playoffs, Super Bowl futures betting shouldn’t cool down… just yet.

The Patriots have lost their season openers three times in the last 17 years: 2001, 2003 and 2014. How did the team finish those years?

The team won the Super Bowl, which proves online bookies who overreact will be hurting themselves. The 2001 season saw the Pats finish 11-5. In 2003, Brady took the team to a 14-2 finish.

Just three years ago, the team finished 12-4; so, it is far too early to jump off the bandwagon.

Soft division

It must be remembered that the Patriots play in a very easy AFC East. This isn’t the difficult division it was 20 to 30 years ago playing smash mouth football. Buffalo and the New York Jets both finished well below .500 a season ago.

The Dolphins, though 10-6, were just .500 away from south Florida, and the team was hammered by the Steelers in the playoffs.

New England will play some difficult teams when playing outside of its division. It isn’t a stretch to say the Pats will drop another game or two this season.

It seems just because New England was projected to win 16 games in the regular season, everyone feels the team is a failure following one loss.

If the Patriots go to New Orleans and get hammered ahead of Houston’s Week 3 visit to Gillette Stadium, then online bookies, bettors and fans should worry.

The team’s Super Bowl odds will slip even more, and the likelihood of a Pats’ Super Bowl win will already be in jeopardy.
